Shaheryar Ali

Martyr Shabana
Shabana’s bullet ridden body was found slumped on ground in the centre of Mingora’s green square, strewn with money, CD recording of her performances and photographs from her albums. Shabana was a traditional singer and dancing girl from Swat. She was brutally murdered for defying the ban imposed by Taliban. A Taliban leader later appeared on the FM Radio [which our most professional Army with one of the best technical skills, failed to block and claimed it was impossible to do so and which resulted in satirical responses from rival Indian Army as well as from distinguished physicist Dr Pervez Hoodbhoy] and claimed the responsibility for her murder and warned that the Taliban will not tolerate any “un Islamic vices”
This all started when, enlightened and progressive General Pervez Musharraf , who than enjoyed the support of Judiciary [Honourable Justice Iftikhar including], the “civil” society, liberal Imran Khan, gave the province of NWFP to Mullahs of MMA , who in return passed the 17 amendment and legalized Musharraf’s coup. The conscientious judges followed suit. Molana Fazul-ur Rehman and Qazi Hussein Ahmad enjoyed the fruits of governance for years and later became voices of democracy along with conscientious judges, civil society and of course Imran Khan! The 5 year rule of MMA in NWFP [Pakhtoonkhawa] resulted in banning of music, destruction of arts including the commercial Arts. The thugs of Jamate Islami blackened the feminine figures on the billboards in Peshawar. The traditional bazaars where music instruments were made and sold and where the artists and artisans lived were targeted by police and moral bigots who forced most of these people to flee the province. When MMA left, the province was in the hands of Taliban and Shabana got murdered.
A lot was written in foreign press, Shabana couldn’t finds even a two column
space in our “free media”, just like that poor Pushto singer who was murdered in Peshawar a few days back. The girl was not even named! Only one who lamented Shabana was “buri auart”, that communist and Indian agent Kishwar Naheed. A representative of second wave feminism, who is now expressing the 3rd wave sensitivities, Naheed was part of the pro-communist Afro-Asian writers association with Faiz Ahmad Faiz. A living witness to the progressive movement and the tradition of resistance literature and Art, Naheed’s response to the times of Jihad has been a collection of poetry which has been titled “Wehshat aur barrod mein lipti hue shairi”. ‘Poetry wrapped in explosives and barbarism”. The poetry is the expression of a true artist living in the age of Jihad and Crusade! The moral relativism demonstrated by most of newly emerged pro-imperialist liberals by their silence on crimes of United States imperialism in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia and Pashtunkhawa, is not to be seen in this work by a great progressive. Whilst the focus of the book remains the Islamist barbarism, one finds echoes of Guantanamo bay, Fallujah and Sarajevo as well. The book includes touching poems on lost comrades like Ahmad Fraz, Benazir Bhutto and Edward Said.

Buddha crying in Swat
Hundreds of years old historic statues of Lord Buddha were also wrapped in explosives and were blown. This monstrous attack on Pashtun history and cultural identity also took place during General Pervez Musharff’s golden rule. September 2007, the giant Buddha in Swat dating from 2nd century BC, was attacked twice in 20 days. The Taliban worked in broad day light putting dynamite with help of drill machines. The BBC, Hindustand Times, Dawn and Daily Times reported and highlighted the issue, but nothing was done and Taliban, re attacked it after 20 days. There was hardly any news in Urdu press; no protests were seen in any city of Pakistan. The free media channels of Pakistan also showed a complete apathy. Now Taliban are blowing humans in Swat. The attack of Taliban on statues and silent collaboration of MMA government scarred the artists especially those who earned their living craving Buddha sculptures which were popular amongst tourists.
The Seriaki speaking Pashtun city, Dera Ismail Khan, also known as DI Khan, the fusion of seraiki and Pushto civilization gave the city a unique status. A cultural hub, it was once known as “Dera Phulla’n da Sehra” [Dera is garland of flowers!]. After destruction of Jhang , this city has seen the curse of Jihad! Hundreds of people have been murdered. For years now target killing of Shia population and progressive artists and intellectuals is going on. Silence is the criminal response of Pakistan. The facts are buried in media grand meta-narrative of “sectarian violence”. There is no sectarian violence in DI Khan, there is no rift or collusion between any two sects which are living together for hundreds of years. What’s going on is an Anti-Shia holocaust by Jihadis: Target killing of intellectuals, writers and artists.
Philosopher, poet and linguist, author of 22 books Jamshaid Nayab , was tortured and his bullet ridden body was thrown in front of his house in DI Khan. The Molana praised the act of killing Kaffirs like him in the Friday sermon. Mr Nayab was an intellectual par excellence, a refined poet who authored books of history of western philosophy, on languages and civilization. He belonged to progressive tradition of intellectuals. He was member of the Communist Party of Pakistan. The left wing intellectuals and political activists have been the main target of Jihadi/Taliban forces in Pakistan. More than 450 socialists/Marxist/nationalists political activists have been murdered in Swat and Pashtunkhawa Most activists of PPP and ANP who have been murdered in Pashtunkhawa were those who belonged to socialists/Marxist wings within these parties. It must be noted 98% of attacks and murders of political activists by Taliban are on 3 parties PPP, ANP and CPP [all left wing parties]Many of these activists were poets and artists as well or main organizers of art and cultural activities in their regions. Great Urdu poet Mohsin Naqvi also fell a victim to these Jihadi forces in the 90s. His crimes were multifold, being a poet [Koran explicitly condemns poets and poetry in Chapters of Poets], was Shia , was progressive and socialist and supported PPP. He also famously wrote a poem on Benazir Bhutto. The poem has acquired a mythical status “Ya Allah Ya Rasool—–Benazir Beqasoor”
Music is a inseparable part of Pakhtoon culture and tradition. Pakhtoons have never lived without music and dance! For the first time such a thing is happening. The shrine of greatest Pashtu poet and Sufi, Rehman Baba was blown up by the Taliban. Rehman Baba had played a central role in building Pashtun identity, language and tradition. A humanist his poetry teaches peace, love and tolerance. He was known as “Nightingale of Pashtunkawa”. Barbarism didn’t spare the most sacred place of the Pashtun Culture. Hundreds of music centers and shops have been destroyed. Years back , great revolutionary and Marxist academic Eqbal Ahmad vested Kandahar of Taliban. He saw a graveyard of Pashtun culture and tradition. The living Kandahar of coffee houses, story tellers and musicians was no where to be seen. He wrote his impressions in form an article which was titled “Land without Music”. Now Pakistan is becoming the Land without Music.

Hai Sherry It is always refreshing to see a topic touched by you…
I have done my graduation from Jahanzeb College Saidu Sharif Swat…Taliban is the hyper reactive form of Jamaat Islami…Transformed from DANADA BARDAR to BANDOOQ BARDAR….In our college days students Organization like PSF or others were fond of arranging TANG TAKOR(Musical Program at various occasions as Tour or College events…students of IJT had always tried to stop it by force…In Wali Swat period JAmat Islami was a banned Outfit and were called FASADIAN….
Jamat Islami and Taliban both are not from the hardcore religious Class…Thatswhy both have a mutual respect for each other….Taliban use very harsh language against other Ulemas or traditional religious Clan….When Ulema from traditional Madressa of Mazahiruloom Mingora visisted Fazlullah at the times when he was given License to Enlighten peoples of Swat through RADIO and increase his following and ask for CHANDAS…They have pointed out Fazlullah misinterpretations of various Shariah concepts….When they were on their way back to the Madressah, Near Ayub Bridge, their Vehicles were stopped and were threatened and warned of their involvment in these issues…People say th people who threatened Ulemas were from security Agencies…
May 17, 2009 at 4:47 am
As for as these Monsters are concerned,They are Aliens to our society and Culture…Bcoz Dancing girls known as DAMEY are always a part of our culture…In the Golden Era of the great Wali,Abdulhaq Jahanzaib…there was an annual one week long folk Mela on every Eid Occasion….These Dancing girls or DAMEY were performing in the Mela..People from all over the state were gathered to enjoy their performances….Wali Swat A H Jahnzaib’s second wife was also A dancing girl(DAMMA).Paathans enjoy their dance on every occassions like Marriage, engagement, Birth of Male Baby and even at the circumcission ceremony of the baby Child…These girls are an integral part of our Pashtun Culture…
For most of the readers here it will be very interesting that Molvi or Mullah was considered a lower cast in Swat culture…
Yousaf Zai state of Swat was a very enlightened state..Wali of Swat was a well educated and very enlightened person…He had developed Swat and established a chain of Roads,Schools,Colleges and hospitals.Yousaf Zai’s have a cast system based on professions and as Mullah was also a profession and a small segment of every village has these Mullahs(called as Mullans or Mullah Khails)…..Thatswhy treated as a low cast by the dominant Khans or Land Owners known as Pukhtanaa…
In Wali e Swat era you can guess status of these Mullahs in Wali dynasty from the fact that there were hundreds of Schools and many colleges but only one Madressah near Grassi ground Saidu Sharif…Just Only One Madressah Man!!!!!
They were always subordinate to the ruling Land Owner Pakhtuns…They have not the courage to go against them…But the Alien elements were supported and funded by mysterious(??????) hands and were given the opportunity to take Over the Valley…They have targeted the Khans and got support from most of the Sadaats and Mulaah Khails and other subordinte casts…

As for as your comments are concerned
“Koran explicitly condemns poets and poetry in Chapters of Poets”
I am complaining U for your cynicism regarding religion…as Islam
I know you have your own ideas and ideologiy but a person of your stature who believes in research and arguments…
I am a graduate but most of my education is from Urdu medium schools thatswhy I cant write rhetorics like U but I wanna quote Quranic Ayaats and after that Sindhi sb remarks on Iqbal…
“026.224
PICKTHAL: As for poets, the erring follow them.
026.225
PICKTHAL: Hast thou not seen how they stray in every valley,
026.226
And how they say that which they do not?
Quran criticize Poets for their contradictory ideas and passiveness…
While discussing Iqbal Ubaidullah Sindhi says…
“Mey Iqbal Ki Shairana Azmat Aur Un ki Dawat (jis mey unho ney Musalmano ko Ahbar o Ruhban Parasti K khilaf ubhara) bada Mutarif hun.Laikin mere Nazdeek Siasi Qayadat aur Deeni Imamat Eik Shair K Supard karna usey Halakat K gadhey mey Dhakailna Hai…Mey Iqbal ki Arab Parasti aur Ajam ki Mukhalifat se Naalaan hun…Islami Tareekh K Arab Daur Ko Muqaddas aur Irani,Turki aur Hindustani Daur Ko Zawal samjhna Ghalat Hai…Yeh Eik hi silsiley ki Kaddian Hain…
Iqbal ka sab se bada Qasur Qaumiat aur Watniat K Taswwarat Ki Mukhalifat ko Shairi K zariy Dlon mey Utarna Hai,
Eik Aisey Daur mey jab Misar,Iraq ,Iran aur Turk Qaumi Shanakht ki Baat kar rahe tey,Iqbal Farzi Islami Biradri aur Millat Islamia Ka Raag Elap Rahe tey…Wo Jamaluddin Afghani Ko to Mante hain laikin Mustafa Kamal ko Nazar Andaz Karte Hain…
Islami Culture aur Islami Saqafat K Farzii Haiwley Khare Karte Hain…
Iqbal ki Shakhsiat TAZAADAT Ka Shahkar Hai…
Somewhere He Says
“Khak e watan Ka mujh ko Har Zarra Dewta Hai”(Naya Shawala)
And in other place he says…
“Tu Agar Daari Tameeze Khub o Zasht
Dil Na BAndi Baa Klokh o Sango Khasht”
(“Agar tum Burai aur achai mey Tamiz Karna Jante Ho
Tou Dil ko Matti K Dheeley,Pathar aur Eint Se Wabasta Na Karo”)
I think U would have understand what I mean….

@Ali
You are brilliant boy better than most of us [the English medium ones]
It breaks my heart to cause an offense especially when it hurts people like you. My position on Islam was like yours or Raza’s or other progressive muslims for a long time.
Unfortunately now we cant afford confusion. When Islam was brought into public discourse, one thing is clear. We have Islam as an aggressor and we have Islam as a victim.
I can agree on you regarding poetry and Koran, many muslims read Koran like that. But you have to agree with me there is a reading of Koran which is different from yours.
There is a Koran which Sufi Muhammed reads and draws inspiration from.
You cant insist on your reading, Sufi cant insist on his! This is the problem of text.
It was precisely this point on which i wrote in post on Mola Ali. Bcz he was the fist man to recognize this evil.
I am not concerned with “truth”. I think nothing is truth. I am concerned with dominant discourse, i drill holes in it. It doesn’t mean that i believe in the contrary argument, no. I am just attacking unity of meaning.
Explicitly , regarding Islam, i am increasingly convinced that its time to encourage criticism on Islam. It will not destroy Islam, it will make it more progressive!

The Qur’an is a book, covered, between two flaps, and it does not speak. It should therefore necessarily have an interpreter. Men alone can be such interpreters…..”
Nehj-ul-balaga, sermon 124
Here read this post, it deals with the issue which concerns you

Thanks both of you. The full poem is awaiting islah as might be evident from the rather raw format of the above lines.
But thanks for a great post, as always, Sherry bhai.
Also, if I could just add something regarding Poetry & Quran…
I do not know which translation of Quran you referred to, and I have yet to read the full Quran’s translation but what I do know is that ‘rizmia shairi’ (may be translated as: war poetry) were part of most (if not all) ‘ghazwa’s as it played an instrumental role in motivating the muslim armies.
I also remember reading about one such poet-sahabi but can’t recall his name at the moment.
The fact that Quran itself is written in a rather beautiful manner of poetic prose (evident and enjoyable even for those who read it despite not knowing Arabic) is also interesting and demands consideration.
May 17, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Also what I wrote above was before reading your last post. I respect your views. I think its about time those who consider themselves muslims (including myself) read and think about the message of Quran. Hence till I do so, I won’t be able to comment on your views regarding Quran.
There is a saying in pushtu ’sheikh day, pa khata day’. It means something on the lines of ’sheikh tareek rasto.n ka musafir hay’.
Do you know Oshu? Well our own ‘molana bijli ghar’ is an islamized version of him. Well may be verse. Molana bijli ghar’s dars attracts many (most of them being the illiterate, oppressed, poor lot). It is such a pity to see a so called religous scholar bombarding everyone with hatred, and teaching people how to be sexual perverts like himself.
May 17, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Well may be *worse*
May 17, 2009 at 6:36 pm
Thanks Sherry Bhai for your response….
I agree to your opinion on Criticizing various interpretations of Islam…
A quote from my blog’s “About page”
Molana Ubaidullah Sindhi Once Said,
“Studying Muslim History,U will see several personalities were declared as Heretics…..These were the peoples who were against the common adopted approaches of tht times in Society. The ruling classes were used to these mindsets and have their own intersts in promoting it.So when someone comes in contrast, the pro establishent religious intelligensia have come to the oppose it.And for this they have used religious terms and sentiments.A voice for social, political and economical change had transformed to religious debates and clashes….Most of the school of thoughts were acclaimed as Heretic in the process and gave rise to sectaranism….”
Your remarks regarding Truth are right…i even repeatidly say,”Sach seedha aur saasa nai hota”
@Le Mystique
Poets are an integral part of aesthetic face of society…
Every language has great poets as Arab had also before the birth of Muhammad(SAWW) as Umayya binus saltt…
Many historians said most of the first followers were fascinated by him…
As Pashto has great poets like Rehman Baba,Hmaza baba,Ghani, Sail and many more….
problem lies when Ghani Khan is preferred over Wali Khan in political struggle…

@Mustique
Koran is a remarkable book! Its fascinating to read it, its fascinating to listen to it.
It has lots to offer to those who are fascinated by concepts like inter-textuality,rhetorical strategies, layers of meaning, streams of narrative
But there should not be a fundamentalist approach to Koran
Not be slaves of text. Iqbal, perhaps had the best modern insight insight into Koran. What he says!
Ye raaz kisi ku nahi maloom keh Momin
Qari nazer aata he, haqeqat mein he Quran
[This secret is not known to anyone , that Momin is not a reciter but is Quran himself]
Allama, this must be kept in mind was fascinated by Vaids as well. He was so inspired by Gita that he wanted to translate it. When he listened to “Gayatri mantra”, he was awe struck. His poem “Aaftab” is an attempt to capture Gayatri mantra into Urdu.
This is the non fundamentalist approach which admires literary merits of Koran but is not blind to wisdom of Gita as well!
May 18, 2009 at 4:00 am
insisting on the literal text of Quran is Wahhabi Approach…
Dr. Najibullah Shaheed in his Speech on Qandhar Dargah alarmed the peoples of Afghanistan of the Wahhabis influence on the border areas of Afghanistan…
It is a pashtu speech and is easily available in the Afghan living ares as Sohrab Goth in Karachi…Its a piece indcating his deep insight of Islam….
Alas!! We have failed to be alarmed 30 years before and now the menace has destroyed peoples from both sides….
May 18, 2009 at 8:43 am
I agree with both of you.
We should never insult others’ God’s or others’ books. Instead we should learn from everyone and everything.
Unfortunately we are stuck with two kinds of extremists. While one side insists on literal interpretation of religion, the other side insists on shunning it all together. One side calls the other religous fundametanlists. And the other call their opposers liberal fascists and God knows what else.
The hatred these two groups for each other
leaves little chance for finding a common ground, or for atleast understanding the other side’s fears, philosophies & issues.. and even lesser chance for the moderate forces. But again, that should be an excuse good enough for the moderates to remain silent.
