The greatest paradox of our times is the paradox of Reality, the dichotomy between the primitive “individual” senses, and the collective sensory experience that is hyper real in nature. The press, the multi-billion dollar media empires that insist on being named as “Mass Media”. They have taken over as our original empirical modalities . Kierkegaard , the great Philosopher first noted the above Phenomenon , he describes modern society as a network of relations in which individuals are leveled into an abstract phantom known as “the public” that is created by the Press.“In historically primitive societies like Pakistan , this dichotomy is often overlooked especially during time of crisis .
Journalists are on streets protesting on streets, dying heroically in line of duty. Black days are being observed. This is a genuine struggle that every “working man” does at such a time.But what is being aired by the Media corporations is not for which their is a Protest on the streets.
The Media is a business empire whose interests are firmly rooted in with this rotten system! These business empires have denied those very rights to the working journalists that General Musharraf has snatched away from people of Pakistan. For 50 years “Wage Awards” for working journalists have been resisted by Media Empires [Almost all of which are Right Wing partisans”]. Journalists are kicked out from their jobs , not a single news comes in Media, that is greatest irony.
Even today when these media empires are supposedly at war with “General Musharraf”, the “agenda” of these media empires is “depoliticization” of the nation. Why “Benazir Bhutto is insisting on a rally in Pindi, when we know their are security threats.” Mr Kamran Khan asks . “That is a Political maneuvering” replies a defense and political analysis Mr Akram Segal.
“But Why” Mr Khan is not satisfied, yearning to get a answer that should sound like ” They have no concern for people’s life and want to do bloody politics”. Such an answer couldnot be given but the message was exactly the same.
When London was bombed every day by the Nazis , Churchill was on air every day that the Londoners should not stop their morning walk! and we didnt. When Islamists thugs blew up bombs in London Underground , next day whole London went on Jobs by Tube! But Bhutto should call off every political activity, than what the fuss is all about? two Petty trade Unionist demands of restoring the jobs of fellow comrades and Air time rights in Pakistan???
Pakistani Media empire is doing what Noam Chomsky calls “Manufacturing Consent” , for a legality obsessed over bureaucratized non Political regime of Professionals that takes over the Cooperate interests of Pakistan Army. This is a clash of Pakistan Army’s corporate interest with emerging Business and Professional class. Both despise the People who are the legitimate ,masters of this land. So Politics has to be destroyed.
But today the “corruption” and “rapidly loosing popularity” fame Party revived “Street Fighting” in Pakistan, Pindi was sealed , but the workers of Pakistan Peoples Party fought with the police in tiny lanes of Raja Bazar.Tear gas, batons, rubber bullets, the fight does on. Unlike Qazi Hussein Ahmad and Mr Imran Khan who obediently respect detention order, Bhutto was able to break the law , get out of her home and drive the car till APC blocked her and managed to give a speech, calling on the “Uniform wearing workers” the police to show their loyalty to people of Pakistan and not a dictator. The Politics has returned to Pakistan.
In the “Movement” that is now going on for months , first time Police today had to use “Rubber Bullets” on the PPP workers at Committee square in Pindi. This is in sharp contrast to the reaction of the party which Mr Segal calls “Most popular party of Punjab” on deportation of its leader! Not a single shop in Lahore closed the next day, the popularity that couldn’t translate into a single successful strike in Lahore in 8 years. Very Objective journalism!!!
The BBC is reporting the only shutter down that has happened in Pakistan since all this mess was in Interior Sindh. Street Fighting has returned , Politics is returning back to Pakistan, the only good news in a long time.
On the situation in Pakistan ,i leave you with this Sonnet by Shelley called “England”, it can be named “Pakistan.” Historicism had some merit!!
Sonnet: England in 1819
An old, mad, blind, despised, and dying king, –
Princes, the dregs of their dull race, who flow
Through public scorn, -mud from a muddy spring, –
Rulers who neither see, nor feel, nor know,
But leech-like to their fainting country cling,
Till they drop, blind in blood, without a blow, –
A people starved and stabbed in the untilled field, –
An army, which liberticide and prey
Makes as a two-edged sword to all who wield, –
Golden and sanguine laws which tempt and slay;
Religion Christless, Godless -a book sealed;
A Senate, -Time’s worst statute unrepealed, –
Are graves from which a glorious Phantom may
Burst, to illumine our tempestuous day. ————
